Step 1Measure the waist as it normally is. Pull the waist in as far as possible and then measure it again. This is just to establish a preliminary base line.
Step 2Fasten around the waist a one inch (25mm) wide belt making sure that it is horizontal and not dipped down in front. Make a mark on the centre front of the person being measured level with the underside of the belt. (Depending on anatomy this maybe above, below or on the belly button)
Step 3Waist measurement using one inch wide belt. Adjust the belt to the smallest circumference at which you feel you could wear it and mark the position. Do not be tempted to settle for a nice comfortable fit, aim at a tight rather than a loose fit. Remove the belt, lay it out flat and measure from the end to the reference mark to determine the length. The waistband will be made to this measurement. A and B are used to provide a comparative check.
Step 4Measure the hips these must be bigger than waist if the belt is going to be secure. If the hips are smaller than the waist then the belt is either impossible or will require some form of shoulder harness to hold it up.
Step 5Side Chain Length With the belt still in position around the waist, make a mark on the thigh where the band is to fit or put another belt around one of the thighs at the desired position (6" above the knee is a typical choice, lower than this is not very practical).
Step 6Right Thigh Circumference Measure around the thigh keeping the tape in close contact
Step 7Left Thigh Circumference Measure both thighs in case there is significant difference between them
